How can I use this data?

You can use remote work data to understand other companies’ remote work policies and how these approaches have changed over time.

Acquire: Where do you get your remote work data?

Remote work is calculated using demand (job posting) data. We monitor job postings from thousands of sources, including job boards, corporate sites, partner feeds, news sites, staffing websites, and applicant tracking systems. Every day, we process an average of 1.3 million job postings in 22 different languages. Learn more about our demand data.

Organize: How do you prepare the data for analysis?

Job postings are written in any format the employer sees fit. When data is unstructured like this, it must be cleaned and prepared before it can be analyzed. Cleaning and preparation can include stripping punctuation and special characters and removing extraneous text not related to the job. We rely on natural language processing to assign job postings to the correct remote work category.

Analyze: How do you calculate remote work?

After determining the type of work associated with the job postings in our database, we can calculate the remote work breakdown of a role or an employer.

Deliver: How do you represent demand data?

We represent remote work as a breakdown showing the percentage of job postings associated with each category of remote work. When displaying trends is useful, we also show percentages over different periods of time.

More about remote work:

How do you identify duplicate job postings?

Sometimes, employers will post a job in multiple places – like their corporate website and a job board. To ensure that our calculations don’t include duplicate postings, we analyze each post’s requisition number, title, location, employer, and date and remove job postings that appear on multiple sources.

How do you count a single job posting that will be used to hire multiple people?

Typically, there’s no way to know how many positions an employer hopes to fill with a single job posting. As such, each unique posting is counted once in our demand calculations.

How do you count multiple job postings in various locations that will be used to hire one person?

Typically, there’s no way to know whether similar job postings in different locations are meant to fill one position. As such, these are counted separately in our demand calculations. We do, however, identify and remove duplicate postings for the same location.
